Nigerian citizens face death sentence in Indonesia

Reports have it that about three Nigerians are currently facing death sentence in Indonesia. The Nigerian government through the permanent secretary of the ministry of foreign affairs, Ambassador Danjuma Sheni made  an appeal to the Indonesian government to hasten ongoing negotiations on the exchange of prisoners between the two countries so as to allow Nigerian prisoners in Indonesia have to serve their sentences in Nigeria.

The ambassador made the appeal, asking that the death sentence on the three Nigerians be converted to life sentences, especially that of Raheem Agbajie Salami whose execution is due to take place any moment from now and would be carried out at an isolated island in Indonesia.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Harry Purwanto said that death sentence in Indonesia is a rigorous, strict and transparent process and is usually not applied to children or mentally ill individuals. He, however, promised to present the appeal before the government.

The government should look strictly into situations whereby her citizens are being executed on foreign soils. Are they guilty of the crimes being accused of? or just another injustice taking its cause? We need to examine our foreign policies critically in Africa because I wonder why 'extradition' is not a common language to Africa.
