Cholera outbreak hits eleven students at FGGC Bayelsa

Cholera outbreak has hit eleven students at the Federal Government Girls College in Imiringi, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The students are reported to be lying critically ill at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenegoa after the outbreak in the school. In fact, the situation was so critical that the school had to be closed down on Friday morning, as parents rushed in quickly to pick their children.

The actual casualty figure is yet to be known. Cholera has been on the rise in the state in recent months following an outbreak early in the year in Southern Ijaw and Sagbama local government areas.  The United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) had been carrying out some medical outreach programmes in these areas to tackle the outbreak. It distributed free drugs and other materials to communities affected by the outbreak as part of efforts to reduce mother and child mortality in the state.

The state ministry of health said the it had sent medical personnel to the federal medical centre to determine the cause of the outbreak, however, fear is rising as most of the water used domestically in rural areas is from untreated sources.
